This antique table belonged to my grandmother, who was born in 1892. It was not new when she acquired it (in Pennsylvania) as a young adult. They don't make furniture like this anymore, with rounded sides that open, from the top, into compartments for storage. My grandmother said these unusual storage compartments were traditionally used to stash needlework: such as embroidery, fabric, yarn and knitting. One the years, I've used these compartments to hide other things! :-)
Although the table has not been altered in the ~ 80 + years it has been in my family, the base appears to be a different wood from the table with drawers. I don't know if it was originally constructed that way or if something happened that made someone change the base. At any rate, for its age, it is in excellent condition. A very solidly constructed and useful table. $225. cash.
